Title: Woodford Bridge
Post by: Cogland on December 03, 2011, 18:34:20
We are just back from a Monday to Friday break at Woodford Bridge. My wife was recovering from a recent spell in hospital and although not fully fit she enjoyed the break having missed a holiday abroad due her health problems. I would like to thank the staff for being so helpful and taking the time to ensure  that we were comfortable.
The weather was mixed but improved as the week went on. If you stay at Woodford Bridge and you decide to visit Bideford I would recommend Velvet & Vanilla for a delicious lunch www.velvetandvanilla.co.uk  Its a small licensed cafe bar in Cooper Street.
All in all a nice break despite it being November and what a bargain Monday -Friday in a 2bed lodge just 400 points.

Enjoyed another break at Woodford Bridge. The staff were very helpful and the refurbished leisure centre adds to the enjoyment.

Cogland:  Thanks for the positive posts about Woodford Bridge.  Turns out we will be staying there this July.  We've already experienced the helpfulness of the staff.

We do wonder if anyone on this board has a favorite car rental company (at Heathrow) to recommend?

Also, any favorite things to do near the resort that might not get the "press" of some of the standard "touristy" activities?

Thanks.

I have used www.economycarrentals.com for my European car rentals in the last five years or so, and with the exception of the Canary Islands where the provider was Goldcar, I have been pleased with the price and the provider.  They also have a freaqueant renter program. My UK rentals have mostly been from Gatwick, and the provider has generally been National, whom I have been pleased with.  National is also one of the few providers in Europe which actually will post the ff miles you are due without having to complain about it.

Carolinian:  Thank you.  We shall look into National and Economy.  We shall also see if any of our affiliations may be helpful (Interval International, British Air, Holiday Inn, for example).

As I recall, Avis is the only car rental company that has connections to BA.

Charlie:  Thanks for the offer.  Your previous advice was good enough to help us choose what to do.  I'll do a review as soon as I can, but here are some quick points:

Woodford Bridge is a very nice resort in a very relaxing location. We had a refurbished unit.  Very nice.

My wife loves the peacocks.

If you do not normally drive in the British style (sit on right in car, drive on left on road), don't drive on B roads in the Penzance to Land's End to St. Ives region unless you have nerves of steel and the instincts of Spiderman.

The tour we took through Dartmoor was wonderful.  Cost a pretty penny, but Cyril of Dartmoor Tours was our kind of wonderful, somewhat quirky character and the region is just wonderful.

Clovelly is absolutely wonderful.  Our kind of "real" site, as opposed to a "Disney" site.  Tintagel is also wonderful.  Probably the two best places we went on our own.  Spent half a day each but should have spent a full day in each. Live and learn. There was NO WAY to know that beforehand.

Don't trust Garmins or similar devices too much as they put you on all the B roads and roundabouts they can.  To drive back to Heathrow yesterday,  we spread a map on the reception desk and asked Leanne (reception manager) what route she would take.  We drove the route she highlighted and the drive back was quite pleasant.

Finally, when we arrived last Sunday, we told the folks in reception it was 93 F and 80 percent humidity when we left Boston.  They thanked us for bringing the warm weather.  We had one very delightful, sunny week.
