Dietary Needs
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:18:51 »
Hi

We have just returned from Tenerife - our party included some friends who have a daughter with special dietary needs as she is lactose intolerant.

How about having someone look into the likely dietary needs of people who suffer from various allergies and give directions to supermarkets which are likely to stock such items?

We found that the new Mercadona over the motorway from the Sunset Bay did stock lactose free milk (as opposed to the god awful soya milk that most other places stock).

Just an idea?

Perhaps that this is something that we can all directly contribute to by posting info of this type on here and other forums frequented by members. The new DRI Forums would be a good place to transfer info to as once they have a reasonable list of shops, supermarkets who stock that type of product they can add it to the disabilities area on their website. Another thought would be a list of restaurants specialising or producing a variety of vegetarian dishes on their menu.

Doggy,

My son suffered LI for the last 10 years and every year we had problems with food / milk both with the airlines and resorts. LI is one of the lesser known dietary requirements, even most airlines don't cater for them.

People like vegetarians are far more catered for (which is a laugh really because being a vegetarian is a choice, being LI   you have no choice - it's medical). The same applies to celiacs - ask the airline this one next time you book !

In the end we just to carry lactase liquid or tablets around and let him eat "normally" - Spanish soya milk I would not give to my worst enemy !

Hmmm - what is this Lactase and where can you get it from?

I don't know if our friends are aware of it's existence as her LI has only recently been diagnosed (sometime in the last 12 months I think)
